THE WEATHERED WHELK
How can one walk down the beach and not stop to pick up a shell? My favorites are the conchs and whelks--the imperfect ones that have long outlived their inhabitants, that have tossed and tumbled along ocean bottom and in with the tide, that show character with aging. These are all shells I've picked up on my own walks along Florida's Fernandina Beach. Each has a beauty its own.
