The broad landscape shot is just one aspect of landscape photography. It’s also about the details—the habitats, the flora and fauna, and the changing weather and seasons. It’s also about mood and emotion, and the ways in which we experience the landscape. In this class, you will learn to see more deeply—to look at the landscape in new ways, notice details that others miss, observe with all your senses, and discover your own unique way of photographing the world around you.
Our base for this workshop is beautiful Madeline Island—one of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. You’ll explore rocky cliffs, a sandy beach, sea caves, old-growth forests, a lagoon and meadows to capture a sense of place, learn how to compose for greater impact, and refine your visual sensibilities. Each day will include a field trip, classroom discussions and image reviews. Our work will explore approaches for wide-angle, telephoto and macro photography.
This is a class about seeing and composing. Tips and techniques will be shared, but students should already know how to use their camera and image processing software. Students may work in color, black-and-white or both. Creative expression is encouraged!
